Hindscarth LW

Unquestionably the finest route to the top of Hindscarth takes to the Scope End ridge, at this time of year rampant with purple heather. The Linescape can only hint at this profusion and sumptuous colour. The approach best begun from Newlands church following the access track leading up through Low Snab Farm. This traditional Lakeland farmstead also offers refreshment, useful to know following a thirst-making early autumn fell-walk. The path switches above the intake wall scanning the poisoned spoil of the Goldscope Mine. German miners were brought here in 1564 on the instructions of Queen Elizabeth I to bolster her royal purse, they extracted lead and copper in galleries that penetrate through to the Scope Beck valley side. The ridge path comes excitedly above the upper grooves of the Pan Holes and dances by stints and stages ever onward to come upon this fabulous view. Ahead see the crest of High Crags, the popular path glancing to its left before mounting the final rise to the prominent wall shelter on the northern tip of the summit plateau.
